Refresh Your Home for Spring with These Top Trends
Spring is a time of renewal and what better way to renew and refresh your home than with a few updates? Sure, spring cleaning is important, but wouldn’t it be more fun to tap into some of the Home Design Trends for 2022? What’s more, you don’t need to spend a fortune or embark on a huge project to take advantage of these trends. Pick one or two from the list and give your home a breath of fresh air!
1. Back to Nature Several paint companies and designers have chosen shades of green for their 2022 color of the year.
In fact, according to Google trend data, search interest in sage (a muted mix between gray and green) has reached a record high. Considering that our homes have become a place of comfort and sanctuary over the past two years, it’s not surprising that we’re gravitating toward colors that help us feel calm and grounded. Green has long been associated with renewal, nature, growth, and tranquility, all of which we could use right now! To incorporate green into your home, consider:
- Refreshing your kitchen by painting cabinets sage.
- Creating a spa-like atmosphere in your bathroom with pale green walls and natural accents, like wood, rattan, and wicker.
- Making your bedroom a soothing haven with a green ceiling and natural linens.
- Adding plants (nature’s original greenery), pillows in shades of green, and other green accents to a neutral palette.
2. Stay Neutral
Some may say that neutral colors like whites and grays have never gone out of style, but they’re seeing a major resurgence in popularity. The difference is a shift from cooler shades like steely gray to warmer tones such as beige, cream, taupe, camel, and blush. Much like green, warm neutral colors can create a calming environment that is both clean and contemporary without being cold. Of course, the beauty of decorating with neutral colors is the ability to add pops of color or seasonal accents. Some ways to warm up your home with neutrals include:
- Replacing your largest piece of furniture, such as a sectional or sofa, with one in taupe or beige and building around it.
- Creating a neutral background by repainting walls in cream, beige, or taupe.
3. But Don’t Be Boring
Neutral backgrounds and furnishings may be popular, but you can have too much of good thing. An all-neutral palette can quickly become bland and boring without the addition of these some bold colors and patterns. Many designers, including Beth Diana Smith, expect to see “bold colors and patterns reminiscent of the 60s and 70s” incorporated into our homes. Think zebra stripes, geometric patterns, or big florals, and colors such as mustard, turquoise, and terra cotta. While bold colors and patterns can be intimidating, adding them in small doses to create interest is easy. For instance, you might try:
- Adding a rug with a geometric pattern to an otherwise neutral living room.
- Wallpapering just one wall in a bathroom to add some punch.
- Replacing one piece of furniture (a small chair or footrest, for example) with something bold and bright.
- Tossing some patterned pillows on that neutral sofa or bed or adding interesting window treatments.
4. Add Some Romance
One of the risks of minimalism and neutral palettes is a loss of warmth and personality. Your home should reflect who you are and what you love. With that in mind, it’s nice to see more romantic and whimsical designs making a comeback this year. Romantic elements may include fluted, ribbed, or scalloped edges to furniture or textiles. Or maybe adding a dash of whimsy is more your style. Whimsical décor is lighthearted, playful, and unique. It allows you to interject a bit of personality into your home. To sprinkle in some romance or whimsy, try:
- Adding one piece of carved, vintage, or painted furniture to a room. The juxtaposition of these pieces with modern elements feels personal and unexpected.
- Using vintage accents (perhaps from your childhood, travels or a flea market find) on shelves, tabletops, or dressers.
- Incorporating nature-inspired prints or patterns, including animal forms, in artwork, table bases, vases, and other decorative pieces.
5. Get Outside
Whether it was our longing to escape on vacation or a desire to reconnect with nature during these past two years, there has been a renewed focus on outdoor living spaces. Stylish outdoor furniture that resembles indoor furnishing is replacing traditional fare. Look for natural materials such as wood, rattan, and wicker (made for outdoor use) in warm colors. You may even consider concrete tables, which can be both traditional and modern looking. Some ideas for creating an outdoor living space include:
- Replacing an outdated patio set with a comfy couch and chair, along with a coffee table in a cozy, intimate seating arrangement.
- Adding a focal point, such as a fountain or firepit (tabletop fire pots work well for small spaces).
- Bringing indoor elements outside such as a rug, ambient lighting, throw pillows, and other decorative items.
Of course, these are just some of the design trends we’re seeing for 2022. Other popular trends include 3D art that literally pops off your walls, a mixture of textures, and a focus on sustainability. Whether you’re looking for a complete makeover or simply some freshening up, we hope these ideas help you create a home you love.
